Dublin’s Indiecater Records are hoping to wedge several new entries into the anthology of classic football anthems with their new compilation, Sing Up for the Boys in Green.
The label has released several themed compilations in the past, including an international one to commemorate the World Cup in 2010, but since Ireland has actually qualified for this summer’s Euro 2012, a collection of Irish-oriented tunes was required to give indie music fans an alternative soundtrack to the tournament.
Eight Irish and two American bands/artists have written songs for the compilation, including Grand Pocket Orchestra who offer Shitkicker, The Holy Roman Army with Royston Flies into the Heart of Darkness and Youth Mass whose contribution is Sea of Green.
There is a song about John Aldridge’s rant from the sidelines at USA ’94, and even one about Giovanni Trappatoni’s interpreter, Manuela Spinelli.
Sing Up for the Boys in Green is available to download from Monday, and is streaming in full at indiecater.comnow.
