London trio Darkstar may not be the first and they may not be the last, but there’s little doubt that their brand of wonky psychedelic pop is presently one of the best doing the rounds. Well, we say pop, but with sonic undercurrents of grime, dubstep and electro, Darkstar is clearly more than the sum of its parts.

Darkstar began as a duo (James Young and Aiden Whalley) before vocalist/ songwriter James Buttery was recruited, affecting a change in the music that, in Whalley’s words, distanced the band from “the old melodies and the melancholy sentiment”. Their latest album, News from Nowhere (named after the classic utopian/sci-fi book by William Morris) is virtually a new start for the trio, and was aptly described in The Quietus as “like being pushed off a skyscraper and discovering wings . . . ” We like.
