Suddenly there’s so much musical activity it’s almost as if the ongoing financial crisis never existed.
The big venture this week is Wide Open Opera’s production of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, with Lars Cleveman and Miriam Murphy in the title roles. This is Yannis Kokkos’s Welsh National Opera production, revived by Peter Watson, with Fergus Sheil conducting and the RTÉ NSO back in the opera pit. It’s the first Irish outing for this seminal worksince 1963, and may well be the first production of the opera to boast an Irish Isolde. A landmark if ever there was one.
The weekend also sees the Sligo Baroque Festival and the New Ross Piano Festival (both Fri-Sun). Camerata Ireland give the first orchestral concert of the NCH’s new season (Tues). There are two nights of US maverick John Zorn in Dundalk (Thurs and Fri the 5th). The East Cork Early Music Festival, which includes the Irish debut of Ensemble Marsyas, will run for four days from Thursday to Sunday 7th. And there are also musical events over the weekend in the Clifden Arts Festival and the ENGAGE Arts Festival in Bandon.
