It's not just on the sleeve-photo for this album that Illinois brothers Ashton and Caleb Bird display a fondness for that evergreen American dream of riding towards the distant horizon on a Harley hog. As with their deeply scuzzy mini-album Reservations, the Birds are out to show that they're stoner-rockers with heavyweight, psychedelic slabs of sound perfect for any acid-drenched biker flick you'd care to script. What's most impressive about their thunderous riffs is the simplicity of their approach, the duo getting to the heart of their mettle with just guitars, drums and vocals. They're at their most exciting when those riffs punctuate driving, compulsive grooves, as on The Future,but even their more flamboyant wig-outs, like Distant Airways, provide reasons to be gleeful.
