From the Roots Up Atlantic****
It's one of those debut albums we really should have seen coming. After all, the tracks to date from Paloma "Delilah" Stoecker hinted that she had a winning way with atmospheric pop, spine-tingling dubstep and slow-motion drum'n'bass. All the same, From the Roots Up still wows because it's such a rounded, accomplished and finely turned-out affair with strong, infectious songs. Stoeker has already made connections with pop peers such as Chase Status, but her debut has designs on hanging out with a much different musical set. The tracks Go (complete with a nod to Chaka Khan's Ain't Nobody), Breathe and Never Be Another weave their spell from handbooks previously drafted by Sade, Portishead and Minnie Riperton. Delilah's voice wows you with its confidence and flair throughout. One of the real surprises of the season. delilahofficial.co.uk
