Album Choice - Delorentos: Night Becomes Light

What a rollercoaster ride it's been for Dublin band Delorentos. They were there (2007 debut album In Love with Detail) and then they weren't (splitsville in early 2009). Following a Road to Damascus- type experience (which was, quite likely, a much-needed figurative kick up the collective ass), they were there again. Cue second album, 2009's You Can Make Sound, and then 2012's Little Sparks, which won the Meteor Choice Music Prize. Interestingly, Night Becomes Light was foreshadowed in April with the release of an acoustic album to coincide with Record Store Day. Unbroken, Untied featured reworked versions of familiar songs along with new tracks Home Again, Show Me Love and City's Still Warm. These same tracks are here, now imbued with a burnished, cinematic sensibility that shows a rather more musically eloquent side to the band. Opening track Home Again is the beaut that sets it all up – a slow- build tune that canters and then sprints past the finish line. There are other, similar treats across the album's 11 tracks (Dublin Love Song, Six Months to the Day and Everybody Else Gets Wet are particularly strong). If anything, they are even more immediately accessible and tuneful than the bunch of crackers we heard on Little Sparks. Delorentos have, in a way that is both surprising and reassuringly familiar, conjured up a suite of songs that reflects the album title. And it isn't fanciful to claim that Night Becomes Light is a fertile, romantically driven concept album with a defined narrative arc that states, often elegantly, that home is where the heart and hearth is.
