The last person we might nominate as an ambassador of holiday cheer, just after the Grinch and Herod, is Steven Berkoff. The director, performer and playwright has been professionally irascible for more than four decades, and in 1985 he turned his attention, more sensitively, to Christmas, "like an avalanche coming… you want to run away but you've nowhere to hide." The tremendous Malcolm Adams (above) takes on this solo performance as an isolated man, waiting for anyone to get in touch, and the dark repercussions of emotional pressure and personal bleakness.
