Celebrated screenwriter and occasional director Robert Towne will give the screenwriting masterclass at the 18th Galway Film Fleadh on July 14th. Towne will also attend the fleadh's screening of Chinatown, which earned him the best original screenplay Oscar in 1974.

One of the most in-demand "script doctors" in Hollywood, Towne has made significant uncredited contributions to many movies, in addition to receiving full credit for his screenplays on, among others, The Last Detail, Shampoo, The Two Jakes and Mission: Impossible. In 1984 he was so displeased by Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, that he took his name off the credits and replaced it with PH Vazak, the name of his sheepdog.

Towne has also directed four feature films: Personal Best, Tequila Sunrise, Without Limits and the recently released Ask the Dust.

Kathy Bates, an Oscar winner for Misery in 1990, will give the acting masterclass in Galway on July 14th and will participate in a public interview two days later. Nicolas Roeg, whose many notable credits include Don't Look Now and The Man Who Fell to Earth, and who recently directed Puffball on location in Co Monaghan, will give the directing masterclass on July 15th.
