Mr John Hume has asked for a clarification of the headline and text of the report in yesterday's editions of the speech which he delivered at the presentation of the IMPAC awards on Saturday night.

When speaking of the "Afrikaner" mindset of unionists and the "territorial" mindset of nationalists, he was speaking of past mindsets, where unionists felt they had to hold on to all power, while nationalists felt they had to unite the land of Ireland. Mr Hume went on to say that because of their numbers and the geography, a solution could not be found without the unionists and that for nationalists it was the people who were divided and not the territory.

As such he added that the best approach for both sides was to seek agreement, which has now been achieved.

An Irishman's Diary on Saturday (June 17th) incorrectly stated that the NCH concert featuring the Army No 1 Band and the band of the Irish Guards will take place next Saturday. In fact, the concert is scheduled for Friday, June 23rd.
