Can’t recall if I took my tablets
first thing this morning—
routine’s regime. Check my pill box.
But what day of the week is it?
Wednesday is empty. Maybe
today is actually the full tomorrow,
Thursday, and I did forget them,
my Zoloft, sertraline,
serotonin enablers. ‘If so, then
dear neurotransmitter—regulator
of mood, learning and memory—
take it easy on me today,
on whatever day of the week
today is today.’

Greg Delanty’s latest collections are No More Time and The Professor of Forgetting. He teaches at Saint Michael’s College, Vermont. His awards include a Guggenheim for poetry. Sweeney Now is due for publication next autumn
