The theme at the Burren Law School over the coming bank holiday weekend in Newtown Castle, Ballyvaughan, Co Clare, is “Arts and the Law”.

The opening address, on Friday, is by Irish Timesassistant editor Fintan O'Toole, followed by Prof Donnchadh Ó Corráin, emeritus professor of medical history at UCC. On Saturday, High Court judge Mr Justice Bryan McMahon will give the Binchy Memorial Lecture, after which Senator Ivana Bacik will chair a debate on creativity and the arts featuring artistic director of Druid Theatre Garry Hynes; music critic Michael Dervan; and the chair of music at the University of Limerick, Prof Micheál Ó Súilleabháin.

The afternoon debate on Saturday will be about copyright and intellectual property rights, with artist Robert Ballagh, solicitor James Hickey and political adviser Mary Kerrigan. On Sunday, there's a debate on the institutional framework and support for the arts with actor Alan Stanford; poet and managing editor of The Irish TimesGerry Smyth; and rector of the Royal College of Art and former chairman of Arts Council England, Sir Christopher Frayling.
