Background:
Joined ICC as graduate trainee in 1981, moving on to venture capital company, 3i, soon after training was complete. Following 3i's exit from Irish market in 1987, joined Anglo Irish Bank, aged 27, as part of management team. At 31 was recruited by Equity Bank, the precursor to Bank of Scotland (Ireland), where he became chief executive. Holds a degree in history and economics.

Married to Mary, with three children aged seven, eight and nine - "like triplets".
