Several telecoms operators have pulled out of digital subscriber line (DSL) trials due to the high costs involved and difficulties accessing Eircom's local network.

Eircom and Esat are the only companies likely to offer high-speed "always on" Internet services when Eircom allows bitstream access to its network from April 1st. Six companies have decided not to trial DSL services, including KPN/Quest, NTL, Worldcom, Formus, Cable & Wireless, Genesis and Aurora.

A source within one company said a lack of information from Eircom regarding the charges it would impose for using its network were a major factor in its decision to withdraw.

Several firms in the UK, including Thus and Kingston Communications, recently announced plans to drop DSL plans due to similar problems.
