WIT team takes prize with caller-profile app

A team from Waterford Institute of Technology has won the €20,000 top prize at the Ericsson Application Awards for a caller-profile application that allows people access information on callers from various social network sites during the call.

Robert Mullins, Kieran Ryan and Mark Williamson beat finalists from Italy, who developed an application for parents to locate children, and a team from China who designed a travel-planning app. The global student competition attracted 120 teams from 28 countries.

Dreamworks hit by 'Shrek' failure 

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc said yesterday that second-quarter earnings will shrink from a year ago because of the domestic box-office performance of Shrek Forever Afterand weaker home-video sales. The California-based company will probably report earnings per share that are meaningfully below a year earlier, it said.

3 adds BlackBerry to handset range

Mobile operator 3 has started offering the BlackBerry with the addition of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 smartphone to its handset range.

Ian Blake, business sales manager of 3 Ireland, said the phone would complement the company’s high-speed network and provide a new option for its 500,000 customers.
