Almost half the Irish workforce travelled to their place of work by car in 1996, representing an increase of 7 per cent on 1991, according to a Central Statistics Office report. This figure rises to 60 per cent of the workforce if the number who travelled as passengers or as van or lorry drivers is taken into account.
