A new facility that will enable internet service providers and telecoms carriers to exchange internet traffic within the Republic was introduced yesterday in Dublin. The INEX exchange manages internet traffic locally by routing domestic-bound data through local carriers rather than through more expensive international routes.

Sending this type of traffic via local telecoms infrastructure should vastly improve connectivity speeds, cost and range of service for their customers.

It will also increase Ireland-to-Ireland internet traffic significantly, with access speeds of 155 megabytes per second or STM-1. Typically, about 200 gigabytes of data pass through INEX in Dublin on a daily basis and the improved facilities can easily accommodate internet traffic of 60 megabits per second and more. The INEX exchange will be located at Data Electronics' 120,000 square foot internet data centre in Dublin.

The new location will also give INEX more prominence in the European Internet Exchange market, as well as scaling for an increase in size and membership of INEX.

The new facility will help to migrate traffic that is currently routed through London, New York and other points, and will act as an ideal peering point for Irish companies.
