US wireless firm Sprint announced a $1.1 billion (€1.2 billion) deal with Nortel Networks this week to move its customer base of eight million subscribers to a unified packet telecoms network. By migrating its network from circuit-based to voice over internet protocol technology, Sprint will be able to deliver services such as desktop videoconferencing.
