Me & My Money

Lesley Dunne, Sirona and sironaboutique.com

Are you a saver or a spender?
Definitely a spender! I work hard so I like to play hard and enjoy my money. As I approach my 30s, I feel I should start saving for the future. Some people would have you believe there may not be a future to save for but you can't think like that. Work hard, stay positive and enjoy your money; that's my philosophy.

Do you shop around for better value?
Mainly when buying electrical items. There are great bargains to be had and it is as simple as going from one shop to another, as well as checking the items out online.

What has been your most extravagant purchase and how much did it cost?
I recently bought a vintage Gucci chocolate leather jacket for €1,700 – a huge price for one item of clothing. I am a collector of vintage clothing. And I love chocolate!

What purchase have you made that you consider the best value for money?
My car – I use it a lot; it allows me to socialise, travel, see my parents. It takes a lot of punishment.

Do you prefer to shop online or local?
I prefer shopping locally, particularly for food. I appreciate the support I receive from local people and businesses in relation to my own – I wouldn't be successful without it.

Do you haggle over prices?
I find it tiresome to be honest. On larger purchases such as cars, houses, etc, haggling can save you a small fortune. However, if the quality is good, I don't mind paying the asking price – no quibbles.

Has the recession changed your spending habits?
Nah, I love spending money! Does that make me a bad person?

Do you invest in shares?
I don't know how they work, how to get into them or 'play the market' – and if I was in, I wouldn't know when or how to get out.

Cash or card?
Always card: I hate carrying cash. I find it easier to keep track of spending on cards and am also less likely to 'impulse' buy.

What was the last thing you bought and was it good value for money?
Hhmmmm – lunch. A salmon salad and coffee, and I ate it, so yes, good value.

Have you ever successfully saved up for a relatively big purchase?
My laptop and my car – I still have them and use them a lot.

Are you a gambler and if so, have you ever had a big win?
I'm not a gambler at all but I do the National Lottery regularly. I've never had a win.

Is money important to you?
It's important for me to have a comfortable lifestyle, and money allows me to do just that.

How much do you have on you now?
About €5.80 in my coat pocket, for parking in the morning!
