MECONIC, Britain's only manufacturer of opiates, ended the year on a high, according to figures published yesterday. The company, which makes a range of specialist chemicals, saw taxable profits soar by 94 per cent to £4.8 million from £2.4 million for the six months to November 1st compared with the equivalent period in 1995.
