The Irish equity market closed stronger against the trend across Europe. Trading was volatile in New York which opened well down before a mid-session rally.

The weak opening on Wall Street after a fall in Far Eastern markets overnight and stronger than expected US economic data spooked nervous European market. The London FTSE lost ground. Wall Street started to fall again in the last hours trading closing just about 1 per cent down on the day.
