Wall Street was on another white-knuckle ride yesterday, with the Dow industrials at one point down 283 points before recovering most of the lost ground.

The retreat, on top of a loss of 103 points over the previous two days, ate further into the sharp gains of Monday and Tuesday, when the Dow charged ahead 290 points.

Earlier yesterday, stocks fell in Asia, and the selling continued in Europe and in Latin America.
