Lucent Technologies and Ascend Communications have announced a $20 billion (£13.5 billion) merger deal. The new alliance is expected to greatly strengthen each company's capabilities in data networking, allowing them to challenge market leader Cisco Systems. Each share of Ascend will be converted into .825 shares of Lucent.

The boards of both companies have already approved the merger but the deal still needs to be cleared by Ascend shareholders.
