Hewlett-Packard appoints new boss to sales arm

The new general manager of Hewlett-Packard Ireland Sales is Ms Elma Murphy, the former head of the company's computer products group. In that position, she was responsible for the sales growth of the company's PCs and printers.

She is replacing Mr Brian Kennan, who has been appointed supply chain manager at the company's inkjet cartridge manufacturing facility in Leixlip, Co Kildare, which is scheduled to employ 3,000 people by the year 2000. Ms Murphy is in her early 30s and has been with the company since 1988.

Mr Fergal Somers, the former general manager of Jurys Inn, Christchurch, Dublin, has been named as the general manager of the new Jurys Hotel in Islington, London, which is due to open next month.

Mr Denis Ryan is the new president of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland (CPA), which has 1500 members. Mr Ryan is principal in the practice Denis Ryan and Associates, which is based on Sundrive Road, Dublin. Mr Ryan has extensive experience as a financial controller in the construction, flour milling and clothing industries.

Mr Kieran Carrick is the new business development manager at Cable and Wireless. He will have responsibility for new product and service opportunities. Mr Carrick was previously business unit manager for PABX and voice products at the company.

Tara Mines has named Mr Charlie Brown as its new managing director and member of the board. Tara Mines is a subsidiary of the Finnish metals group Outokumpu and its zinc and lead mine in Navan, Co Meath, is the biggest in Europe.

Mr Brown joined Tara Mines in 1990 as manager of mining, later becoming production manager and general manager in 1995.

Campaign HTDS, the advertising, marketing and planning firm, has appointed Ms Seana Hopkins its new financial controller. Ms Hopkins recently won first place in the ACCA tax framework examination.

Alcatel Business Systems, the voice, data and image communications company, has appointed Mr Colin Gibson, as regional sales manager for its Northern Ireland office which was opened recently in Belfast. The company employs 300 people between the Republic and Northern Ireland.
