Call to abolish stamp duty on premiums

The Irish Insurance Federation has called for the abolition of the 3 per cent stamp duty on insurance premiums.

It said news of the 2 per cent Quinn Insurance levy brought clarity but it was concerned policyholders will now face an additional levy.

“Unlike the compensation fund contribution it [the stamp duty] is not used for any insurance-related purpose but is simply a general tax- raising measure,” chief executive Mike Kemp said.
