MORE than 110 jobs will be created in Belfast over the next three years following decisions by two engineering companies in the city to expand their operations, it was announced yesterday.

About 94 new jobs will be created by precision engineering company Mackie International which is to build a £13.6 million sterling foundry at its Springfield Road complex in west Belfast.

Mackie, which floated on the stock market in 1994, said the decision followed approval for £4.08 million in grant assistance from the Industrial Development Board.

Construction work will begin immediately with the facility expected to be completed by July next year.

The new site will cover the group's own casting requirements for machinery designed and made in Belfast, as well as work for other customers, he said.

Production will continue for the moment in Mackie's existing foundry, which will be closed and the staff transferred to the new site.

Economy Minister, Baroness Denton said. "This is a substantial investment by Mackies as the company seeks to diversify into other business areas following its restructuring and flotation."

Thrige Scott, an engineering company in east Belfast, announced a £1.7 million investment in additional plant and machinery to enable it to make a new range of electric motors.
