European Competition Commissioner, Mr Karel Van Miert reacted cautiously yesterday to the proposed alliance between the London and Frankfurt stock exchanges, saying his officials were "likely" to look into it.

The Milan stock exchange said it was seriously considering joining the new London-Frankfurt super-bourse but added it would not be taking any rash decisions.
