The weaker opening session on Wall Street sent share prices tumbling in the Frankfurt after-hours session and the Xetra DAX, which reflects all-day trading, closed at 4145.41.

Dealers said concerns that the rally in the Far East might prove short-lived weighed down the market. Among individual stocks, Adidas jumped 6 per cent after upgrades from Commerzbank and Paribas in the wake of the Salomon merger.

The overnight rebound in Asia sent the Paris market higher but it closed well off its day's high as the Dow fumbled in and out of positive territory, in its opening session. Brokers said there was good demand for stock, and volume was fairly solid.

Italian shares closed higher but off the day's high, after Wall Street's indifferent opening session and a statement from Prime Minister, Mr Romano Prodi that the Asian crisis could have serious consequences for the economy.
