THE US computer company Digital has reported significant growth at its Irish subsidiary for the year to the end of June, despite problems at its parent company.

Digital, which employs more than 1,000 people in Ireland, said its local sales increased by 10 per cent from £56.7 million to £62.1 million.

PC sales in Ireland were on a par with last year, according to Digital Ireland's general manager, Mr Paul Harvey.

The Irish sales figures do not include the turnover of its European software centre in Galway, which "made further progress during the year", according to Digital.

The company said it was continuing to develop new business opportunities in Galway, where it is establishing a European Internet Expertise Centre.

Digital, which plans to cut 7,000 jobs worldwide over the next 12 months, reported a loss of $433 million (£267 million) for its last financial quarter which included a $492 million restructuring charge.
