CGNU, which trades as Hibernian in Ireland, has posted a 23 per cent rise in new worldwide life and pension sales in the first quarter of the year.

But volatile stock markets caused a 47 per cent drop in investment product sales as people shunned equity-linked products such as unit trusts.
