CORK TRAINER Michael Winters secured one high-profile success this year with Rebel Fitz in the Galway Hurdle and hopes to do the same on the flat with his other stable star, Missunited, in next month’s Cesarewitch at the Curragh.
Missunited won her seventh race from just 11 starts at Listowel on Saturday and while Winters believes her long-term future lies over jumps, the Cesarewitch is a tempting short-term prize.
“I don’t think the handicapper can be too harsh on her as Willie Mullins’ mare (Tarla) didn’t run her race and Aidan O’Brien’s horse (Harrison’s Cave) ran too keen,” said Winters yesterday.
“I think we’ll take her for the Cesarewitch next, she’s got plenty of stamina so why not?
“She could be very good over hurdles. She’s been winning in heavy ground but only because she’s been meeting summer ground horses. She’s got a nice action, so I think against better horses she’ll need nice ground.
“There’s a few good mares around in Ireland at the minute like Quevega and Voler La Vedette, they’re top-class, so we’ll just see how we go,” he added.
Rebel Fitz is set to have his next start at Tipperary on Sunday week in Grade Two company.
Winters is keen to see how high he can reach in the hurdling ranks before he considers a switch to chasing for the seven-year-old.
“He should run at Tipperary on Sunday week. A lot of the better horses will be coming out now so he might find it a bit tougher,” the trainer said.
“Everything that has finished behind him recently has decent form, but he has a good turn of foot and that’s been winning him his races.
“He goes in soft ground but I don’t think he wants real deep winter ground so you might find he has a holiday when it gets like that. We’ll see how he goes against the better horses before we decide when he goes chasing,” Winters added.
