Charl Schwartzel was still in the driving seat with a one-stroke lead over closest rival Lee Westwood as the morning field turned on the final day of the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek.
Schwartzel birdied the second to widen the gap, but drops at the fourth and ninth brought him back to 11 under, just one shot ahead of the Briton.
Westwood stormed out of the blocks with successive birdies to go to 12 under, but a double bogey at the par-four fourth brought his scores back to par. Westwood immediately got another shot back at the fifth, but also dropped at the ninth, which is playing as the most difficult hole of the day.
Welshman Mark Pilkington, who was joint second at the start of the day, was solid through the first six holes with five pars and a birdie at the second, but fell off the pace with three successive double bogeys before the turn.
Des Terblanche jumped from fourth to third with an eagle at the second, but slipped back after a bogey at the fourth and a run of drop shots at the seventh, eighth and ninth to turn in 38. After another drop at the 12th, the Vryburger slipped to eighth.
World number seven Ernie Els showed touches of last year's magic and raced upwards on the leaderboard to five-under at the turn after collecting two birdies and an eagle at the second against two drops.
