GAELIC GAMES ROUND-UP: NHL: Westmeath hurlers ended their Division Two campaign on a high at Cusack Park, Mullingar, yesterday by recording a 2-17 to 1-14 victory over Laois.
The winners got off to the best possible start with a goal from corner forward Derek McNicholas after just a minute. The sides were level at the break on a scoreline of Westmeath 1-8, Laois 0-11.
Laois scored their goal when Brian Campion’s long-range free-kick deceived Westmeath goalkeeper Jimmy Greville in the 21st minute.
Westmeath responded well and substitute Alan Devine finished to the net to set up the victory.
NFL: Vying with Antrim for the top of the table spot in Division Four, Sligo's footballers just held on for 0-11 to 0-10 win over Wicklow in their final game in Aughrim on Saturday.
The result itself was immaterial as Sligo had already won promotion to Division Three along with the other divisional finalists, Antrim.
CAMOGIE: Eimear McDonnell scored 2-6 as Tipperary powered their way to the Division One league final at Semple Stadium yesterday after beating Kilkenny by 2-19 to 0-13. Kilkenny, who were warm favourites going into this game, relied on captain Ann Dalton for 11 of their tally.
