Course specialist Nick Price tied the luckless Jeff Sluman with an eagle at the 16th hole, then beat him with a birdie on the second play-off hole to win the St. Jude Classic in Memphis, Tennessee on Sunday.

Price, who missed birdie putts on the final two regulation holes, saved par after his drive on the first play-off hole - the par-four 18th - found a bunker. He had no such trouble at the par-four 12th, but Sluman did, as his tee shot landed in the water.

After Sluman's third shot found the green, Price left his iron approach about 20 feet from the cup. The 1993 champion never gave Sluman a chance as he rammed home the putt, improving to 3-2 in play-offs and collecting the £216,000 first prize.

Although Price won for the first time since the MCI Classic in April 1997, he has played well this year. This was his fifth top-10 finish in 14 events and boosted his yearly earnings to £540,000 with his 16th career victory.
