LEINSTER amateur Peter Lawrie survived a fraught first round in the British Amateur Championships at Turnberry in Scotland yesterday. The University College Dublin player surrendered a three hole lead to former Walker Cup player Garry Hay on the homeward stretch.
But the 22 year old held his nerve to triumph on second extra hole across the Championship venue bunkered his approach shot as young rival secured a par.
His countryman Jody the only Walker Cup player competing, progressed to second round with a four and three win over Little, of Moor Park. He now faces Roger Beames, of Wick, in second round match. Both players were losing semi finalists at Royal Liverpool last year.
The Milltown player three birdies despite the windy conditions. And he played quite well considering conditions. It was a lottery out there."
