Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, the two great power bases of Turkish football, will between them provide 17 of the 21 players travelling to Dublin with the national squad for the first leg of the Euro 2000 play-off at Lansdowne Road a week tomorrow.
Among the nine Galatasaray players named are Hakan Sukur and Umit Davala, two of the goalscorers in Wednesday's 3-2 win over AC Milan which ended the Italian club's hopes of qualifying for the next phase of the European Champions League.
Sukur, currently the biggest name in Turkish sport, is the country's record scorer and, as such fills a major role in the plans of national coach Mustaf Denizh in his attempt to take them to the European finals for a second consecutive occasion.
Also included is Sukur's regular front-line partner, Saffet Akyuz, who didn't share in the win over Milan. Among the Fenerbahce players chosen is reserve goalkeeper Engin Ipekoglu, who at international level, as in club competition, provides the cover for Rustu Recher.
The Turkish party is due to arrive in Dublin next Thursday. The first of the Irish players will assemble on Sunday with the first training session planned for the following day.
