When Edward Gillespie added a bumper to the festival programme he made sure that Willie Mullins would sharpen his annual score line. He may have done a similar turn for “King of the Banks “Enda Bolger, by introducing a cross-country contest to the programme. Davy Russell pinched the corresponding race on Dix Villez at the meeting here last November. L’Ami was only fourth that day and was beaten by Garde Champetre next time. However, he looked to be peaking at the right time with a cantering 12-length win at Punchestown.

4.40 David Nicholson Mares’ Hurdle
This should be an ideal run for United, who has been a consistent performer for her Newmarket trainer. German-bred, her sire Desert King signalled the arrival on the Classic scene of a young training star by winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas and Derby on Aidan O’Brien’s second season at Ballydoyle. O’Brien has held his form well and so too has United. Two years ago she finished fourth to Inglis Driver in the World Cup Hurdle. She has won her last four starts over two miles four furlongs and was able to win over three miles at Ascot, showing that nothing will gallop up the hill with more élan than her.
