Golfers who play bridge or bridge players who play golf - all are welcome at the annual Inter Golf Club Bridge tournament for the Mollie Fox Cup, at Milltown Golf Club on March 4th and 11th. The Pitch and Putt Union of Ireland have selected a strong team for the inaugural European Pitch and Putt Team Championship which takes place at the West Park course in Essex on June 10th/11th. The Irish team is: Frank O'Donoghue (Templebreedy, Cork), Derry McCarthy (Deerpark, Killarney), Liam O'Donovan (Bruff, Limerick), Brendan O'Shea (Shandon, Dublin) and Junior Smith (Lucan, Dublin). O'Donoghue and McCarthy have represented Ireland against Australia in 1993 and 1995, while O'Donovan, O'Shea and Smith will be making their debuts. Six countries will participate, England, Ireland, Catalonia, Italy, Austria and France. The teams will contest an 18-hole strokeplay qualifying round and the championship will then be decided by matchplay. The preliminary rounds will consist of five 18 holes singles matches while the final will have two foursomes matches as well as the five singles.
Over 200 promoters representing the golf industry and clubs in Ireland will compete for their share of Ireland's market at Golf Expo '99 at the RDS from February 26th to 28th. Ireland's largest consumer golf show will have over 100 exhibition stands. Board Failte and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board will feature the home holidays while Sean Skehan's World of Golf will give all the news on the overseas destinations. Visitors are promised numerous opportunities for practice, putting competitions and prizes to be won each day.
