Danny Willett wins Masters
Sunday night at the Masters usually provides some of the year's best sporting theatre and the 2016 edition proved no different as Sheffield's Danny Willett shot a closing round of 67 to secure a stunning victory at Augusta National.
For much of the final day defending champion Jordan Spieth had seemed destined to retain his title until he reached Amen Corner and the 12th hole, where a quadruple-bogey seven opened the door for Willett to steal in and become just the second Englishman, along with Nick Faldo, to slip on the famous green jacket.
Rory McIlroy must wait another year to complete a career Grand Slam after he shot a 71 in his final round to finish tied for 10th place, while Shane Lowry delivered one of the highlights of the day with a hole in one on the 16th.
Jamie Vardy keeps Leicester marching on
Another underdog success crept closer yesterday as Jamie Vardy's brace gave Leicester City a 2-0 win away at a seemingly Championship-bound Sunderland, a result which left boss Claudio Ranieri in tears at full time.
The Foxes remain seven points clear of Tottenham Hotspur, who reacted to the news of Leicester’s win by beating Manchester United 3-0 at White Hart Lane, with Louis van Gaal’s side capitulating under a second half onslaught of three goals in six minutes.
Dublin and Kerry reach league final
Predictably the Allianz League final will be a rerun of last year's All-Ireland final as Kerry and Dublin both won their semi-final fixtures by double-digit margins yesterday.
In a Croke Park double header the Kingdom delivered an exhibition against Roscommon, winning 3-15 to 0-14, before Jim Gavin’s Dubs strolled past Donegal with a 1-20 to 0-13 win.
Toulon’s European reign is over
Toulon's three year reign as the champions of Europe has come to an end after they were beaten 19-16 by Racing 92. The Parisian club will play Leicester Tigers in the Champions Cup semi-finals after they thrashed Stade Francais at Welford Road.
