Spieth overtakes McIlroy in rankings as Jason Day wins USPGA, Eamon O’Shea steps away in disappointment, reflection on Ireland/Scotland and what to watch out for

Golf: USPGA

After so much heartbreak in his bid to do so, Australian Jason Day held off Jordan Spieth for a breakthrough first major championship win at the US PGA Championship last night.

At 27 he’d had no fewer than nine top-10s in past major championships, but this time a record low score for a major of 20 under left the outcome in no doubt.

The win moves him up to third in the world rankings, as Spieth replaces Rory McIlroy in first.

A final round 69 for nine-under-par 279 left McIlroy in the top 20 on his return to competition from the ankle injury which ruled him out of Bridgestone and the British Open.

“I’m walking away pretty happy with how the week went. Obviously it isn’t a win and didn’t get myself into contention, but considering six weeks ago I wasn’t able to walk, it’s not a bad effort,” said McIlroy.

GAA: Championship

“I had my innings with Tipp. It was bloody . . . it was great. We did what we could. We tried to play the game in a particular way. There are men in Tipperary who can carry this on. I just feel that we gave it everything every time we went out. We tried to win.

“We didn’t always win. We were beaten by a point, beaten by three points. It doesn’t look great sometimes but we did our utmost to win these games.

“I said to the players, the belief I have in them and the belief I have that they can continue and go on and grow better when I’m not there is really strong. Somebody else will go on and do this better than I did. That’s all you can do.”

Tipperary manager Eamonn O'Shea got pretty emotional in explaining his departure to the press following Sunday's one-point All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Galway. Tipp just on the wrong end of it again, and if the sheer desolation upon the final whistle wasn't enough the players must now contend with the loss of the hugely popular O'Shea.

Soccer: Premier League

Manuel Pellegrini says his Manchester City team’s 3-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday was the “least we deserved” despite José Mourinho’s claim that the 3-0 scoreline was a “fake”.

The pressure now mounts on Mourinho, a stuttering pre-season, and in three competitive games between the Charity Shield and league, two losses and a draw. All within the furore surrounding his treatment of female doctor Eva Carneiro following the Swansea draw. He certainly wasn't accepting that City were the better team though.

Elsewhere it's Liverpool/Bornemouth tonight, with the Reds' young defender Joe Gomez set to continue at left back following an impressive start to life after his switch from Charlton.

Manager Brendan Rodgers says; “He can play in many positions, centre-half being the main one, but he has the flexibility and qualities to play at full-back so he is definitely a player who will add great value to our squad. What struck me when I met him was his maturity. He recognises his opportunity.”

Rugby: World Cup

"This was a sloppier, less accurate Irish performance, but Scotland put up a more meaningful and exacting challenge than Wales a week previously, which made it a more meaningful exercise from the perspective of a grateful Joe Schmidt." - Gerry Thornley is assessing Ireland's 28-22 win over Scotland in Saturday's World Cup warm-up this morning.

While Liam Toland is talking aboutthe huge talent that will be left behind as Joe Schmidt selects his top 31 for Rugby World Cup, following another successful outing for the fringe players.

Athletics: Doping

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) suppressed a 2011 survey that reveals up to one-third of the world's top competitors admitted using banned performance-enhancing techniques, Britain's Sunday Times and ARD/WDR German TV have reported.
