Rather a disappointing volume, considering the potential richness and variety of the subject. Perhaps the format is mainly to blame - there is a distracting number of headings and sub headings, and the continuous use of the historic present is also off putting. There is some real meat here, but it has to be carved out of its wooden setting and the book also assumes a knowledge of French ranks and customs and geography which relatively few English speaking readers are likely to possess.
