FAI Cup Second round: Everton - 1 Waterford Utd - 3 Waterford United had to come from behind to beat Everton of the Munster Senior League in the FAI Cup at Turner's Cross last night.
A hat-trick of goals from centre-forward Vinny Sullivan helped Waterford stamp their class on the game after Everton went into an early lead.
The former Celtic and Livingston player spoiled his chance of finishing with four goals by shooting wide from a second-half penalty but his finishing marked him as the outstanding player on the pitch.
The prospect of a shock result was raised when Everton went in front after just four minutes.
Right winger Lawrence Fitzpatrick won a header on the edge of the penalty area to direct the ball through for Richard Harris to volley home from 15 yards.
Everton might have stretched their lead as Waterford took time to settle. This came as a surprise for Everton have only just begun their pre-season training while Waterford are well into their campaign.
Goalkeeper Dan Connor had to be at full stretch to save from David Welch as Everton looked well capable of causing Waterford further grief.
But it fell to Sullivan to turn the game. He gave Everton plenty of problems and his busy style marked him down as an elusive opponent.
His first goal came after 16 minutes when he forced the ball home at the far post after a corner from Alan Reilly. He added a superb second when he crashed a shot from 25 yards in the 27th minute.
Sullivan blew his first chance of completing his hat-trick when he shot wide from a penalty in the 47th minute.
But there was no denying Sullivan and he fired home a fine third after a cross from Kevin Waters in the 60th minute.
