Former Republic of Ireland and Manchester United captain Roy Keane celebrated his first game as Sunderland manager with a 2-1 win at Derby County.
Derby threatened to ruin the former midfielder's day by leading at halftime through Matt Oakley.
But some choice words from Keane during the break sparked a revival. Chris Brown equalised on the hour and new signing Ross Wallace, acquired by Keane from his former club Celtic, swept in the winner three minutes later.
"It was a case of keeping calm, trusting the players and for them to trust each other," Keane told Sky Sports. "That's what I told them at halftime and they responded as I expected them to."
Cardiff City, who have 13 points from six matches, stayed top on goal difference despite losing 2-1 at Preston North End.
Birmingham City also have 13 points. Dudley Campbell and Nicklas Bendtner, on loan from Arsenal, were on target in a 2-1 victory over Hull City.
