Leeds have confirmed former Republic of Ireland boss Steve Staunton has left the club in the wake of Gary McAllister's departure as manager.

McAllister was axed on Sunday following a run of five successive defeats which saw the Whites drop off the pace in League One.

Staunton, who linked up with McAllister as his assistant last February, has now parted company with the Yorkshire club.

A club statement read: "Following the departure of first-team manager Gary McAllister, assistant manager Steve Staunton has parted company with the club.

"The first-team squad returned to Thorp Arch on Monday morning with Neil Thompson and Andy Beasley taking training.

"The club would like to reiterate that we hope to appoint a new manager as quickly as possible."
