FAI Cup second round review: Sligo Rovers'hopes of winning a three in a row of FAI Cup titles was ended at the first hurdle as Monaghan Unitedsecured a massive 3-1 upset victory at the Showgrounds.

All looked to going to plan when Mark Quigley put the home side ahead from the penalty spot after Ross Gaynor was take down by Stephen Maher.

Monaghan equalised just before the half hour when Tony Griffiths was on the end of a flowing move from the visitors and took the lead in the 72nd minute when a long-range shot from Jason Marks beat Gary Rogers in the Sligo goal.

Sligo’s night got worse when Alan Keane was sent off after 77 minutes and their misery completed when Roddy Collins’s side was awarded a penalty with six minutes to go, which Keith Quinn fired home.
