Wigan boss Paul Jewell will need to dip into his pockets to pay a fine the Football Association are almost certain to dish out for a stinging attack on referee Phil Dowd after last night's 1-1 draw at Blackburn.
Jewell pulled no punches in his condemnation of the official following a string of highly-controversial decisions at Ewood Park.
This is the same Dowd who almost cost Wigan a place in the Carling Cup final by rejecting two cast-iron penalty appeals in the second leg of their semi-final at Arsenal.
On this occasion he and his assistants combined to rule out a valid Arjan de Zeeuw strike in the first half. Then with Wigan leading courtesy of a moment of invention from Jason Roberts, Dowd failed to spot Lucas Neill's blatant charge on goalkeeper John Filan that led to substitute Shefki Kuqi netting the equaliser six minutes from time.
What was particularly hard to fathom was that Dowd allowed that goal to stand after denying Rovers their own perfectly legitimate effort in the opening 45 minutes, with Filan again involved.
In jumping for a high, hanging cross Dowd adjudged Paul Dickov had impeded Filan despite barely making contact with the Australian, before Morten Gamst Pedersen slipped home the loose ball.
No wonder Jewell later described Dowd as "incompetent", with such use of diction frowned upon by the FA who will no doubt hand the Latics boss a disrepute charge.
Jewell, though, could not hide his anger as he stormed: "We were robbed in the first half and robbed at the end, but that's about right for Phil Dowd with Wigan. I never usually talk about referees but he has cost us the game.
"I have seen our disallowed goal on the monitor and it's not even close, while their goal at the end is not a foul, it's GBH. But he didn't think it was a foul. One Premier League manager once told me Dowd is the worst referee we have got in this league - and he ain't wrong.
"He genuinely gets things wrong. He doesn't do it on purpose, he is just not very good. He is just incompetent. I know I am going to get myself in trouble - I can see that - for telling the truth, even though it's not going to be worth the fine.
"But he should come in here and face you lot (the media) and explain his decisions. They must think we are robots for not wanting to say anything after the heat of a battle. They just don't know how we think."
