Celtic midfielder Thomas Gravesen admits he was to blame for the 3-2 defeat to Manchester United in a thrilling Champions League Group F opener at Old Trafford last night.

The 30-year-old Dane lost possession to Michael Carrick in the lead up to Louis Saha's second goal after Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink's opener had put the visitors into a shock lead.

Celtic midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura equalised with a delightful free-kick just before the interval but moments after the restart Gravesen lost the ball to Paul Scholes which allowed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to slot home the winner.

The Celtic midfielder said: "I think it's easy to see why we lost - because of my mistakes. I can only hold my hands up and say I'm the player who cost us the game.

"For me personally, this is a massive disappointment. I made two massive mistakes and that made it very difficult for my team.

"The team performed fantastically. Everyone worked their socks off and we played some fantastic stuff.

"We put in some unbelievably good crosses and made a lot of good attacks but I spoiled it all. I feel awful about that.

"I can only say it's my fault, but that doesn't make it any better. It's easy for me to see where I need to improve. I need to work harder.

"No one said anything to me in the dressing room - they didn't need to."
