FAI Cup round-up

Dundalk 5-0 Shelbourne

Dundalk cruised into the third round of the FAI Cup as they easily accounted for Shelbourne at Oriel Park on Friday night.

The First Division side found themselves a goal down after 14 minutes when centre back Ryan Robinson headed Ronan Finn’s cross into his own net.

The goal came just three minutes after Alan O’Sullivan pounced on Paddy Barrett’s weak pass to go clear on the Dundalk goal but the Shels centre forward saw his effort drift wide of the upright.

Stephen Kenny’s side had far too much for the Reds and the second goal arrived in the 22nd minute when Jake Kelly diverted Richie Towell’s pinpoint cross past Greg Murray.

Kurtis Byrne put the result beyond doubt in the 49th minute, hooking the ball home at the far post before Richie Towell made it 4-0 from the penalty spot before Ronan Finn stooped low to head home the fifth late on.

Drogheda United 3 Cabinteely 1

Drogheda United booked their place in the next round after a hard fought win over Cabinteely at United Park.

The Boynesiders took the lead when Joe Gorman’s cross was dropped by Seán Hyland into the path of Seán Thornton who stabbed the ball into an empty net on nine minutes. It looked like Drogheda would further extend their lead as they forced the better chances but on 31 minutes Cabo drew level.

Daniel Campbell angled a pass to the back post where Jamie McGlynn had ghosted in and he turned the ball past Dylan Connolly.

Cabinteely then dug in until the 71st minute when Drogheda capitalised on another defensive mistake. Kevin Knight’s mis-placed pass was picked up by Adam Whelan and he bore down on goal before hitting a low shot past Hyland. Seán Brennan put some gloss on the scoreline with a goal in the 94th minute after Duffy’s initial shot was saved.

Bray Wanderers 3 Limerick FC 1

Chris Lyons’s quick-fire double sealed Wanderers’ passage into the last 16.

In front of the smallest crowd of the season so far at the Carlisle Grounds, the striker hammered to the roof of the net in the 62nd minute after Peter McGlynn’s cut-back.

Then in the 65th minute, Lyons held off Paudie O’Connor’s attentions to delightfully dink the ball over Limerick’s teenage goalkeeper Tommy Holland.

Moments later, Michael Barker teed up Luke Gallagher whose placed effort came off Tommy Holland’s legs and hit the post but no corner was awarded.

The Wicklow side took a seventh-minute lead when skipper David Cassidy was left unmarked to volley in Graham Kelly’s free for his sixth of the campaign.

But the Blues levelled on the quarter hour through Dean Clarke’s sixth goal of the season after he lost his marker to glance in a 10-yard header off Ian Turner’s corner.

Wexford Youths 0 Cork City 2

Goals towards the end of each half kept Cork City’s cup dreams alive despite a lacklustre performance against a depleted Wexford Youths at Ferrycarrig Park.

The opening goal arrived in the 46th minute when Billy Dennehy cracked a great left-footed shot across goalkeeper Graham Doyle into the opposite corner of the net for his eighth goal of the season.

Neither side produced anything in the way of flowing football in the second half until three minutes from the end when sub Mark O’Sullivan, after his initial effort had been pushed away by Doyle, knocked the rebound into an unguarded net to finish things off.
