Each rugby league side has 13 players - six forwards and seven backs.

Each side has the ball for six tackles in which time they try to cross the opponents' goal line for a try. After each tackle is complete, the player in possession picks himself up, heels the ball behind himself to a colleague and the move starts again.

After six tackles have been completed the ball is handed to the opposition. Usually, just before the sixth tackle is made, the side in possession will kick it down field so the opposition are in a worse position when they finally get possession.

If the ball is dropped, thrown forward or goes out of play on the side lines a scrum will take place.
