Rugby:Italy's Andrea Masi came out on top of the public vote and was named 2011 RBS Six Nations Player of the Championship. It is the first time an Italian has won the award.

Over 17,000 votes were cast and Masi secured over 30 per cent of the vote while team mate Fabio Semenzato was second with 12 per cent. Ireland flanker Sean O’Brien was shortlisted behind England’s Toby Flood and Chris Ashton and Ronan O’Gara was seventh for the accolade won Ireland winger Tommy Bowe last year.

“It has been a championship of highs and lows for the Italian team, our win against France will go down in rugby history but to finish sixth frustrated us all,” said Masi, who scored a try in the famous France win and also against Scotland.

“However, to be named the RBS Player of the Championship is a fantastic way to end what has been one of the most competitive championships I can remember. We have worked hard this year and can be proud of our achievements. Italian rugby continues to strengthen and we are very happy with our progress as a team. To be the first Italian voted to win this award by the fans is a huge compliment.”
