Magners League round-up:Leinster's hopes of retaining the Magners League crown look dead and buried after they went down 27-16 to Edinburgh at Murrayfield last night.
The home side blitzed Michael Cheika’s men in the first half, building up a 21-3 advantage by the break on the back of three tries.
Scottish international Ali Hogg landed the first blow after 11 minutes, with Chris Paterson slotting over the extras. Ten minutes later they were over again after a fine move saw John Houston touch down for a converted try.
Simon Webster then got over after 25 minutes, with Paterson again on target with the conversion, to put the Scottish province 21-0 ahead.
Fergus McFadden did get Leinster on the board just before the break with a penalty and he added a second three-pointer soon after the restart to put a better look on the scoreboard.
Paterson and McFadden exchanged penalties, before Leinster finally extended the Edinburgh defence on 58 minutes for hooker John Fogarty to get over for a try, which McFadden converted to leave just eight points between the sides.
Paterson put a little more daylight between the sides with his second penalty on 63 minutes, with Edinburgh holding out for a win that sees them move into third position in the table, two points behind Leinster.
Ulster saw off a fine comeback from Glasgow to record a nail-biting 20-19 success at Firhill. Matt Williams’s side led 20-6 at the break following tries from David Pollock and Scottish international winger Simon Danielli. Clinton Schifcofske added conversions to both after earlier opening their account with a penalty.
Two Colin Gregor penalties were all Glasgow could muster in the opening half, but they fired out of the blocks in the second half as Thom Evans got over for a try on 43 minutes. Gregor’s conversion and a penalty from replacement outhalf Dan Parks left in 20-16 going into the last 15 minutes.
Ulster’s hopes were not helped when centre Darren Cave was sin-binned in the closing stages and Parks would draw his side to within a point with three minutes to go.
The Scottish international has a chance to seal victory for the home side with the last kick of the game, only to see his penalty drift wide.
